Gearset.play 02 is a collection of analog and digital artifacts visualizing the retrieval of episodic memories. Consisting of kinetic gear-nails, a sensor-embedded headset, VHS family videos, and frame-corrupting code, the user initiates the experience by moving the gear-nails near the headset’s sensors—an interaction playfully engineered to mimic a “thinking pose.” This activates the gear atop the headset’s DC motor, setting the gear-nails in motion, and triggering a “memory,” a video from my family’s VHS archive, to play on screen. While the gears are active, the videos are continuously looped, corrupted, and reconstructed frame-by-frame, reflecting the subtle modifications made to recalled memories, and examining the impact of this malleability on our personal truth.
Gearset.play 02 was exhibited in 𝒄0𝒎1𝒏𝒈 𝒐𝒇 @𝒈𝒆, curated by Queenie Wu, and The Age of Black Metal, curated by Ari Melenciano.
